King Abdullah University for Science and Technology

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah is advancing his country’s goal of catching up with the West in science and technology by building a graduate research institution.

The King Abdullah University for Science and Technology, or KAUST, will be one of the world’s 10 largest endowments, with more than US $10 billion.

The King is breaking with tradition and religious believes by allowing both men and women to study together and barring the country’s religious police from the university.

Once completed in 2009, the KAUST campus community will be approximately 20, 000 people.

The state-owned oil giant Saudi Aramco has be hired by the King who facilitated a US $23 billion budget to build the institution.
