Damian Ortega, Center Pompidou

Damain Ortega is the first Latin American artist to have his work displayed in Espace 315 at the George Pompidou Center, in Paris.

The exhibition is on until February 9th and will run along with the work of Abraham Cruz-Villegas and Gabriel Kuri.

Ortega was noticed back in 2003 at the 5Oth Venice Biennale. For his presentation, the Cosmic Thing, he partitioned a Volkswagen beetle and suspended it from the ceiling. Needless to say, this captured the art world’s attention and launched him as a new prominent artist in the scene.

Born in Mexico City, Ortega’s work has focused on deconstructing Mexico’s consumer culture and what he sees as a blind cult-like following for material goods.

Espace 315 has stated that his “sculptures, photographs and actions often draw on “poor” materials and evoke potential evolution and continual change.”
