2009 Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race

2009 Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race

A collegiate tradition expanding back to 1829, the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race will take place on March 29th, 2009. This will be the 155th annual competition between the two University crew teams.

The tradition for a rowing race between the schools began with two friends from each respective university. Cambridge sent the challenge to Oxford and thus started the tradition where the loser of the previous year challenges the opposition to a rematch.

Cambridge currently leads the overall series since its start, with a total of 79 wins to Oxford’s 74. In 2008, Oxford won the race by six lengths. This March, Oxford will look to add another victory to close the five year gap, while Cambridge will fight for their 80th win in celebration of the University’s 800th anniversary.

The race is always an exciting event along the River Thames. Nearly 8 million people watched the race from home, while 250,000 were along the river banks for a closer view.
