Vladimir Putin, who many believe is the man behind the power, continues to be one of the most influential international players in world politics.

A villain to some and a champion of Russian national interest to others, Mr. Putin remains as the most powerful figure in Russia. He has consolidated control over his nation’s domestic and foreign policies and has destroyed any viable opposition at home.

Mr. Putin remains largely popular among Russians. While he no longer serves as President, in his new role as Prime Minister, Mr. Putin has shown no signs of relinquishing control.

Many international political analysts speculate that after the presidency of his personally chosen successor, Dmitry A. Medvedev, Mr. Putin will return to the presidency in as little as four years.
